Full Time Student Application Process: STEP 2 (Online Orientation)

    Read the following orientation then answer follow up questions based on the information you read. This is to ensure that the expectations for independent study and online learning are understood.

    iHigh Virtual Academy is an online college preparatory public high school within the San Diego Unified School District. All class instruction, text, and assessments are conducted online with a few exceptions.

    iHigh Virtual Academy courses are provided through a district contract with Apex Learning, Inc. Apex Learning, Inc. is accredited as a Distance Education School by the Commission on Schools of the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. Apex Learning, Inc. A-G courses are accepted by the University of California to meet scholarship requirements.

    Program Components

    iHigh Virtual Academy is an Independent Study Program. Students earn attendance based the assignments they complete and submit. Per Independent Study law, and prior to enrollment, the student, the parent, and the school must agree that iHigh Virtual Academy placement in the best interest of the student.

    - iHigh Virtual Academy is a home-based online education program. Students complete the assignments online, at home, with parental assistance and support. This differs from the traditional school setting where the curriculum is delivered to the student by the teacher in the classroom. iHigh Virtual Academy students are independent learners with time-management skills. The student is responsible for their own learning and academic progress.

    - iHigh Virtual Academy students are expected to commit 7-10 hours every week for each course to be successful. Advanced students have the option to accelerate their pace according to individual ability.

    - iHigh Virtual Academy students have the option of using a loaner laptop, printer, and internet service provided by the district; or they may provide their own computer, internet access, and printer.

    - iHigh Virtual Academy provides a campus setting for on-campus support, student study groups, proctored and state mandated exams, and scheduled science labs.

    Course Curriculum

    Courses: Students take three classes per nine week session. This enables the student to complete 6 credits per semester,
    12 credits per year.

    Course Syllabus: The syllabus provides course assignments, assignment due dates, points earned, and grading criteria.

    Progress Report

    Assignment scores are available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the student's responsibility to check scores frequently. This encourages questions to be handled in a timely manner and increases awareness of student performance. Parents receive weekly email progress reports to assist in the support of their student's academic progress.

    Role of the Student
    1. Students attend the on campus student orientation the first week of school.
    2. Students present a completed work binder to the supervising teacher according to the schedule.
    3. Students read each course syllabus thoroughly.
    4. Students follow all syllabus and assignment directions.
    5. Students complete and submit online assignments on time.

    Role of the Parent
    1. Parents assist students by helping with assignments, syllabus interpretation, due dates, time management, and work quality as needed.
    2. Parents are to provide, or arrange, for all student transportation for scheduled and proctored exams, labs, and student study group.
    3. Parents monitor student academic progress according to the weekly email progress report.

    Role of the Content Teacher: Each student is assigned a content teacher according to student's schedule. The content teacher grades the hard copy portion of student work and provides support with academic planning, test proctoring, and subject matter support and program questions.
    1. Content teachers communicate regularly with all students.
    2. Content teachers proctor student exams and labs.
    3. Content teachers facilitate student study group sessions.

    Role of the Supervising Teacher: Each student is assigned an iHigh supervising teacher. The supervising teacher supports the student to foster student success skills and encourage student growth.
    1. Supervising teachers monitor academic student performance and quality of work.
    2. Supervising teachers emphasize and foster essential student skills such as: academic progress communication methods, working independently, following directions and course calendar schedules, attention to detail, troubleshooting student performance problems, time management skills, quality of work.
